DEPARTMENT OF NEUROPHYSIOTHERAPY

The Department of Neurophysiotherapy, School of Physiotherapy, D Y Patil University operates actively in the areas of Clinical work, Teaching and Research work.

Neurological Rehabilitation is a specialized field that caters to a wide spectrum of adults and children who have been afflicted by conditions that affect the various components of their nervous system. This involves an elaborate assessment of their impairments, the impact that the impairments have on their lives at large and then the employment of strategies that facilitate the attainment of functional goals co-constructed by the therapist, the patients and the salient members of social structure, of which the patient is a part.

The Department of Neurophysiotherapy is actively and consistently engaged with the rehabilitation of children diagnosed with Cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome, Muscular dystrophies, Spinal dysraphisms and various syndromes that pose challenges to the their wholehearted experience of the life process and with Adults with Post stroke paralysis, Parkinson’s disease, Cerebellar disorders, various Spinal cord and Peripheral disorders of degenerative, traumatic and other origins and many such conditions that impede their experience of healthy living and their social participation.

We are an enthusiastic team of Staff and Students involved in various teaching activities at different levels. The students of Postgraduation and Interns as well as the students of graduation are trained in the Cognitive, Psychomotor and Affective domains of learning through robust clinical experience, case discussions and a series of seminars, lectures, theoretical discussions etc.

Our staff members have been continually driven towards updating themselves with the best of knowledge and upgrading their therapeutic skills. The teachers are internationally certified in various Neurotherapeutic skills like Adult and Paediatric Neurodevelopmental therapy, PNF and Brunnstorm and have been training in other related forms of therapy like Sensory Integration, Arts based therapy, Play therapy etc. We ensure that these newly acquired skills are tested and refined through practical application and are prudently assessed for their efficacy. We do extensive qualitative and quantitative assessment and documentation work to ensure quality in what we do.

The staff and students are involved in a range of Extension-extramural activities undertaken by the Department like the Continued Medical Educational Programs, Poster presentations for awareness of Stroke, Street plays, awareness program for stroke survivors for home adaptations, awareness camps for parents of children with Cerebral Palsy etc. The Department consistently works in the area of research and has a minimum of 7-10 research projects in the form of surveys, Observational studies and Experimental Interventional studies besides case studies being carried out at any given point through the year.

We are equipped with a library that provides access to books that range from the most referred textbooks to the co-curricular books that reinforce the learning process. We also have access to various national and international journals.

We are also armed with equipment like the Neuro-Com Balance Master that is used for assessing various domains of Balance and for training of the same, besides the basic assessment and therapy tools like the Hand evaluation kits, SimmesWeinston filaments, scales, therapy equipment and play equipment used to train gross and fine motor skills etc. Thus, the department strives to be as holistic as possible in creating a situation conducive for the enrichment of individuals be it patients, staff, students, care givers and the society that is indirectly but essentially woven into these contextual subsets.

We see every single individual that we work with, not as a patient, but a life process with an abundance of possibilities that get discovered as we factor in the challenges and unravel the potential resources. Our consistent efforts are towards bringing semblance to the beauty of human potential through all that we do.
