DEPARTMENT OF MUSCULOSKELETAL PHYSIOTHERAPY

Since Musculoskeletal practice is an ever updating practice with emphasis on skills and technology, the Musculoskeletal OPD and Laboratory both are well equipped with necessary infrastructure and a good clinical load to aid patient care and to facilitate learning and research practice in post-graduate learners.

Musculoskeletal Laboratory

The Musculoskeletal Laboratory offers equipment that allow objectivity in analysis, as well as devices that assist rehabilitation. The students are introduced to objective movement analysis through IMU based Motion analysis device the "Noraxon's Myomotion". This device allows uninterrupted movement analysis that can be used in a wide variety of situations like activity, kinematic gait analysis, ergonomic analysis etc.

The "8 channel Integrated EMG" (Biograph Infiniti), operational at the Department aids the for evaluation of muscle MVIC and frequency analysis during different tasks and greatly aids activity and ergonomic research in the department. The same unit can also be used for muscle training via biofeedback.

Baseline Push-pull dynamometers, Hand dynamometer, 3 position Pinchmeter, back leg chest dynamometers are available for objective strength analysis. Purdue pegboard and Jebson Taylor hand function device that are objective, valid and reliable measures of hand function are available at the department.

OPD and Clinical Practice

The students are trained to develop necessary skills in conservative and post-operative management of patients in Musculoskeletal OPD, Orthopedic ward, Plastic surgery wards, Ayurveda wards and other IPDs. They gain the insight to current pain management and rheumatology practice at the hospital via speciality OPD's like Pain OPD and Rheumatology OPD. The necessary exercise and electrotherapy equipment like IFT, Combo-therapy, Multipurpose Stimulators, US, LWD, PWB, SWD, Portable TENS units, Cryotherapy unit, Manual therapy table, Pressure Algometer, CROM, Pressure biofeedback, Stability trainers, Swiss ball, Therabands, mats, CPM etc. are available in the OPD to aid patient care.

Teaching - Learning:

The dissemination of best practices and current research trends is imparted through a highly qualified faculty though seminars, bedside clinics, Journal clubs, discussions, tutorials and lab training sessions, assignments etc. The recent updates in clinical practice are also facilitated through guest lectures and workshops in emerging areas by experts.

The Department aims to impart the necessary cognitive, psychomotor and affective skills required for musculoskeletal rehabilitation, that is evidence based and emphasize on sound clinical reasoning.
