ELECTROTHERAPY & ELECTRODIAGNOSIS LABORATORY

Department of Electrotherapy and Electrodiagnosis aspires to be an excellent educational, therapeutic and diagnostic department in the School of Physiotherapy, D.Y.Patil deemed to be University, Nerul, Navi Mumbai.
Electrical stimulation for pain control was used in ancient Rome, 63 A.D. It was reported by Scribonius Largus that pain was relieved by standing on an electrical fish at the seashore. From the 16th to 18th centuries various electrostatic devices were used for headaches and other pains, even Benjamin Franklin was a supporter of this method for pain relief.
Electrotherapy uses electrical signals to interfere with the transmission of neural pain signals into the brain. It effectively slows down or distracts the message from the nerve to the brain. From a physiotherapy point of view, affecting one’s ‘Pain Gate’, whether in an acute or chronic pain episode, is crucial area of treatment and electrotherapy is a very useful resource where conventional medicines are not as affective. Electrotherapy can also involve the use of this electric current to speed tissue healing where tissue damage has also occurred.
At the department of electrotherapy, in School of Physiotherapy, D.Y.Patil University, Nerul, Navi Mumbai, we work towards preparation of physiotherapists in the field of Electrotherapy to work in the community in accordance with ethical and social standards through the latest technology and teaching aids with emphasis on strengthening the role of scientific research and promotion of theoretical and practical knowledge compatible with scientific progress.
We accomplish these with the development of academic programs within the framework of knowledge for the management of patients with most of the types ElectroPhysical Agents. Starting from the history of electrotherapy to the recent advances, all the aspects are covered in details.
We create an academic environment in the field of electrotherapy that will prepare graduates to meet program outcomes. Provide a curriculum that reflects current evidence-based electrotherapy practice, research and accreditation standards to optimize this knowledge and incorporating it successfully in patient care. The curriculum is maintained in a way that will ensure all graduates are meeting the defined student learning outcomes. The department maintains policies and procedures that promote success and are applied equally to all students and faculty. Provide clinical education experiences that expose the students to the breadth and depth of contemporary electrotherapy practice. We Provide experiences (case studies, assignments, simulated patient care, field encounters) that facilitate the development of critical thought processes.
The Department of Electrotherapy trains students in the basic skills of treatment using high and low frequency electrotherapy modalities which are used for reducing pain and improving strength.
The equipments in the Electrotherapy lab are setup according to the norms laid down by the Maharashtra Council of OTPT and are enough to cater to the needs of all the students. We use and train students in advanced testing and training of Electrotherapy modalities.
Department of Electrodiagnosis primarily aims at creating a diagnostic facility of Electromyography (EMG) and Nerve Conduction Studies under Expert faculties in the field. We also train Undergraduates and Post graduates students and enable them to understand the basics and advances in the field of electrodiagnosis.
