Occupational Therapy comes under allied Health Science Program which has started in India since 1950. Occupational Therapist (OTst) treat all types of cases, Orthopaedics( Fracture, ortho operated cases like total hip and knee replacement, spinal cord injuries etc, Neurological ( Paralysis, Cerebral Palsy, Nerve and muscle conditions, degenerative conditions – adult as well as children), Surgical conditions( Plastic surgery operated cases, paediatric operated cases, Cancer operated cases, general surgery operated cases- amputation of the limb etc), Medical conditions( Leprosy, Diabetes neuropathy, cardiac conditions, pulmonary conditions, Arthritis conditions etc) and Psychiatric conditions.

We treat patients right from acute cases that is when patient is admitted in the hospital- General ward or in ICU till the patient can be completely independent.

How the Occupational Therapy is different than other therapy?
We consider patient as a whole human being and deal with their everyday problems in life as well OT is different than other therapies as we treat physical as well as psychiatric problems of the clients, and also problems in their occupation.

Occupational Therapists’ job does not end when the client is discharged from the hospital. OTst are trained in functional evaluation and solving the problems of the client till the person becomes completely independent. OTst do complete occupational analysis of the client, work evaluation, Activities of daily living problems, so also play and leisure activities of the client and give them solution so that the person can lead a complete independent life in spite of disabilities.

OTst concentrate on the abilities and not on the disabilities of the client.
If the client cannot go back to the job because of physical or psychological problems, we can give adaptations to the patient, so that he can overcome the problems. OTst also prescribe belts,( like cervical collar and any other), can prescribe mobility aids like crutches, wheelchairs etc after evaluating the condition of the client.

Ergonomics is a main domain of Occupational Therapy. Clients having occupational problems because of environment conditions, OTst deal with it effectively with implementation of ergonomics in industry as well as home environment.

OTst are a part of the team where client is evaluated for the fitness certificate, as well as the disability certificate. AS OTst can also treat psychological conditions of the client, certification from the OTst is needed for certification of percentage of the disability given by the government of India.

There are only three municipal colleges, one government college and one private college i.e., D. Y. Patil School of Occupational Therapy in Maharashtra. As the percentage of the therapist passing out every year is low, the demand is too much in society.

OTst can work in multi-speciality hospitals, Special need schools, institutions or can have their own clinic, as well as can attend the clients at home or in institution.

In USA, in the period of recession, which was from 2010 onwards, the demand for OTst never ceased.

This was one of the professions which continued to have demand all over the world. In 2014- The ten Professions in demand list was published in USA, and Occupational Therapy was on the 7th rank.

In D. Y. Patil School Of Occupational Therapy, the seats capacity is 70 and fee- structure is 2,50,000 per year. We are affiliated to Maharashtra OTPT council (MOTPTC), All India Occupational Therapy Association (AIOTA) and World Federation of Occupational Therapy (WFOT)
