FAQ's

Registered nurses (RNs) must have at least an Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) OR General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM), but some students decide to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B. B. Sc. Nursing).

These subjects appear to be a common fear among prospective students, and the answer depends on the type of nursing you pursue. If you’re interested in the GNM/B B Sc Nursing route, your training program will likely include science courses like anatomy, physiology, human growth and development, and basic nutrition. You need mathsapplication to drug calculations in all programs.

Don’t let maths anxiety keep you from pursuing your career goals. Revisit the basics—fractions are your friends! - its very interesting as a part of teaching-learning activity.

I am anANM/GNM/BSN and a licensed practitioner (either RN or RM). Do I have to go back to school for further studies or can I just take the next exam, get licensed, and start work?

Having experience, as a RN or RM is valuable in terms of knowing that nursing is the right field for you but, unfortunately, all further additional studies for RN or RM programs require formal full time further studies.

In India, that is not possible.

For UG and PG studies formal full-time training is must as per the Indian Nursing Council (INC) stipulations.

There are online certifications and since nursing is a hands-on profession, even online nursing programs require in-person clinical training with real patients. Programs that combine online learning with real-world practice are called hybrids.

If you’re pursuing a bachelor’s degree and already have a combination of clinical hours and a current RN license, you may be able to find a program that is exclusively online.

It is mandatory for all Nursing Colleges/ schools to have students’ placements for their clinical training hours.

To become an RN, you’ll need either an ANM or a GNM or a BSN. There are pros and cons to each, of course: An ANMhas a lesser monetary commitment, making it a good jumping-off point for prospective students with financial concerns for further studies. A BSN, on the other hand, can lead to a job with more responsibility and higher pay.

“One of the things I love about nursing is that there are so many doors to get into the nursing profession,” says Beverly Malone, CEO of the National League for Nursing, a membership organization for nurse faculty and leaders in nursing education.Where to start “depends on your situation,” she says. “Match who you are with what you need,” meaning look for a program that suits your personal and family situation but also helps you achieve the nursing goal you’ve set.

Yes—while doctors take the Hippocratic Oath, take nurses the Nightingale Pledge , named for Florence Nightingale, who is considered the founder of modern nursing. The pledge calls on nurses to elevate the standard of their profession.

It is mandatory to submit the score .

Each state licenses the nurses working in the State. You’ll send your transcripts, application, and fee to the state board that handles licensing.

If your nursing license is revoked due to violations of your state’s Nurse Practice Act, you might be able to petition the state board to reinstate it

If you let your license lapse for just a short time, you can generally renew it—perhaps by paying a late fee—without much trouble. Check your individual state requirements.

Tuition costs vary widely depending on the type of program you choose—private university versus public colleges. Another factor is what kind of nurse you want to be.For example, if you want to be an RN, you can choose a two-year ANM program or a three-year GNM or a four-year BSN program. Your best bet is to reach out directly to the schools you’re interested in and get the most up-to-date costs.

Yes—tuition isn’t the only cost you’re looking at. Here are a few others:

1) Uniform, Scrubs and equipment
2) Textbooks
3) Additional tests and screenings (background check, drug screening, etc.)
4) Licensing fees

Rs 20,000/- to Rs 40,000/- per month. Experience fetches better scales.

Earning a BSN along with experience can definitely have a positive impact on your salary: It can make you more desirable to employers, qualify you for a wider variety of jobs, and open doors to leadership opportunities.

The differences are distinct. ANMs provide basic maternity care for mothers and discuss healthcare issues with them. RNs, on the other hand, may perform diagnostic tests, administer medications, put together treatment plans, and supervise other health workers, including ANMs.

Some nurses think nursing is difficult while others do not. There are many fields of nursing a person can purse and some nursing jobs are a little bit easier than others. For example, there are positions for registered nurses where they work in a OPD setting giving injections and providing preventive and promotive care all day. This job to many nurses would be considered laid back and relatively easy. On the other hand, a nurses’ who works in a trauma unit, critical care unit and emergency room probably finds their job also challenging than the nurses’ who gives injections all day. However, all of this depends on how the individual perceives difficult.

Every new nurse will at first perceive their first job as difficult but once they get comfortable it will become second nature to them. So, to sum things up nursing has difficult aspects to it but it depends on what you perceive as difficult. I recommend finding out what you like and go with it. You’re nursing clinicals will really help you in making this decision.

Since majority of nurses in are employed in hospital settings they usually work 8 hours shifts. The working conditions can be a little tedious especially if you are having a busy day, because bedside floor nursing can be an unpredictable environment you do not usually have a set time for breaks. So, in reality you take breaks when you have the time. Not all days are chaotic and you can find the time to get a break. However, I cannot speak for every hospital in Indiabecause some may be better than others with making sure their nurses get breaks on time.

Yes, you have a certain person you work for and this person is usually a nurse Supervisor. Majority of nurses work under another nurse who is in a management position. Since majority of nurses work for hospitals they usually work for a health care system. These health care systems have nurse Supervisors that hire nurses to work for their unit. However, sometimes nurses may work for doctors and this is in an office or clinic setting. Nurses who are travelling nurses work for travel agencies that are managed by nurses.

Absolutely! so you could get anywhere from a 6-12% raise every year. Yes! I love being a nurse. I love the fact I get to take care of people and watch them get better (in most cases) or I can help them make their illness more bearable. I have found being a nurse is not about the glamour or pay check, but it is about how you can impact others by being a positive, uplifting light in their hour of darkness.

If you ever start getting to the point (as I did at one point in my career) where you only come to work to get a pay check then it is time for a different career setting. Always remember that nursing is a very versatile profession and it offers so many career paths.

No. You have to fall in line with the hospital policies and schedules.

As a nurse you do a wide variety of tasks. I like to say I am a “jack of all trades”. Nurses must be able to perform a wide variety of nursing skills at their job. These nursing skills are usually learned while in nursing school. However, some more advanced nursing skills will be learned by the nurse while working at their job. Nursing school teaches the nursing student basic nursing skills such as physical care, starting an IV, inserting a Foley catheter to caring for critical patients in the ICU and handling the various equipment of hemodynamic management.

As a nurse you will be delegating care, assessing patients, calling doctors, giving medications, and assisting with procedures. The list could seriously go on and on. Again, this depends on what career path you choose as a nurse. A labor and delivery nurse will perform different tasks compared to a cardiac intensive care unit nurse.

Of course, they will because things happen. However, if you are always doing this then they may not be very happy with you. You will always need to provide documentation or proof why you were not able to come to work. This not only proves your case but it covers you. It is important to try to plan in advance and not to sign up for days to work you may not be able to. Most companies do have policies that if you call in so many days you will not be eligible for a yearly raise so check the call-in policies.

Here is a great guide by S. L. Page BSN, RN called “How to Pass Nursing School“. This book gives you detailed information about how to pass nursing school from beginning to end. She gives in depth information on how to succeed in nursing school.
